In a letter dated January 29, 2025, obtained by journalists on Tuesday, Anyanwu urged the apex court to fast-track proceedings, emphasizing the need for a swift resolution to the PDP’s lingering leadership crisis.

The PDP leadership dispute began in 2023 when the party’s South-East zone nominated Sunday Ude-Okoye to replace Anyanwu after he contested the Imo governorship election.

On December 20, 2024, the Appeal Court ruled in favor of Ude-Okoye, officially recognizing him as the PDP’s National Secretary. However, on January 27, 2025, the Court of Appeal in Abuja issued a restraining order, allowing Anyanwu to retain the position until the Supreme Court’s final judgment.

Tensions Escalate as Ude-Okoye Is Forcefully Removed from PDP Meeting

According to Naija News, the crisis took a violent turn last Wednesday when Anyanwu’s supporters stormed a PDP Board of Trustees meeting, forcibly ejecting Ude-Okoye. Security operatives had to intervene to restore order.

In reaction to the growing tensions, PDP governors, led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, released a communiqué endorsing Ude-Okoye as the legitimate National Secretary and urging the National Working Committee (NWC) to enforce the court ruling.

The governors also distanced themselves from Anyanwu, declaring their full recognition of Ude-Okoye as the rightful PDP National Secretary.

Despite this, Anyanwu insists that he remains the legitimate PDP National Secretary until the Supreme Court delivers a final ruling.

In petitions to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Supreme Court, and Court of Appeal, Anyanwu condemned the governors’ stance, calling it a “deliberate attempt to fuel crisis” and urging the judiciary to intervene decisively.
