During a Zoom meeting, the governors made it clear that they would contest the declaration. A communique, signed by the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, emphasized their commitment to upholding the Constitution, defending democratic governance, and ensuring the rule of law is respected in Nigeria.
The communique stated: “The Forum took the opportunity to review the unfortunate declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, March 18, 2025. The Forum strongly condemned the suspension of the Governor of Rivers State, his Deputy, and the Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.”
The statement continued: “We reaffirm our commitment to defending the Constitution, promoting democratic governance, and ensuring the rule of law prevails in Nigeria. In light of this, we have resolved to instruct our Attorneys General in the PDP-controlled States to challenge Section 305 (3) of the Nigerian Constitution and seek judicial interpretation.”
The governors expressed solidarity with Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and the people of the state during this politically tumultuous time. “The Forum stands with His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, and the good people of Rivers State in these challenging times,” the communique said.
