Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are preparing for a crucial meeting in Ibadan, Oyo State, on April 13 and 14, 2025, to discuss the party’s future amid growing calls for a united opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

This gathering comes at a pivotal moment when opposition leaders nationwide are intensifying efforts to create a unified front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). However, internal divisions and conflicting interests among key stakeholders within the party continue to impede progress on coalition talks, according to sources familiar with the situation.

One of the key objectives of the meeting will be to assess the PDP’s strategy for potentially collaborating with other opposition groups. Despite strong interest in uniting against the APC, internal disagreements have hindered tangible progress toward forming a solid opposition coalition, sources reveal.

In addition to discussing coalition talks, the governors are expected to address the ongoing legal battle with the federal government. This includes contesting the state of emergency declared in Rivers State and the subsequent suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Fubara, also the vice-chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, has been at the center of a political crisis, raising concerns about federal overreach and its impact on the party’s internal stability.

The governors will also focus on the recent Supreme Court ruling on the disputed position of the PDP’s national secretary. The ongoing tussle between Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye has attracted considerable attention, with the governors set to review the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the judgment.

A source close to the party’s leadership disclosed that the CTC would play a critical role in deciding who legitimately holds the position of national secretary. The outcome of this decision is seen as pivotal for the party’s future as a strong opposition force.

“The governors’ decisions will have significant implications for the PDP’s relevance in the opposition coalition. If they fail to act decisively, the party risks losing its position and could be overtaken by smaller factions,” the source warned. Additionally, with over 75% of PDP members expressing dissatisfaction with the party’s leadership, many are reportedly preparing to leave if the situation is not addressed.
