The demonstrators, mainly from Elleye and Engine in Ahoada East Local Government Area, gathered to oppose the appointment of a Sole Administrator, Ibokette Ibas—a move they believe undermines democracy in Rivers State.
Marching through the streets with placards bearing slogans like “Ibas leave us alone” and “Our democracy is threatened,” the women sang solidarity songs and voiced their grievances. Tensions flared when security personnel attempted to block their movement, but the women stood firm.
In an effort to break up the protest, the security forces resorted to firing tear gas into the crowd, triggering panic as the women scattered in different directions. Disturbing footage circulating online shows some of the women crying out and struggling to breathe after inhaling the gas.
Despite the crackdown, many protesters remained resolute. Some sat defiantly on the ground, chanting, “No Sim, no Rivers State,” refusing to be silenced.
