The announcement was made in a statement released by the family and signed by Oghenekome Ufuoma Omu, confirming that he died on Tuesday, April 29.

Described as a devoted family man, patriot, statesman, military leader, and community figure, General Omu’s life was defined by his steadfast service to Nigeria and the Isoko Nation.

He had a distinguished career in the Nigerian Army, where he held key command and administrative roles. From July 1975 to July 1978, he served as Military Governor of the South-Eastern State, where he spearheaded significant infrastructure and policy initiatives that helped lay the groundwork for development in the region.

In 1985, he was appointed Commandant of the Command and Staff College and served on the Armed Forces Ruling Council, then Nigeria’s highest decision-making body.

A major figure in Nigeria’s political evolution, General Omu chaired the Constitutional Conference Commission in 1994, playing an influential role in shaping the path to democracy. His leadership and commitment to nation-building earned him widespread national respect.

In 2009, late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua appointed him Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS).

Even in retirement, General Omu remained dedicated to the progress of his native Isoko Nation, contributing tirelessly to community development.
