In a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) spokesperson ACI Akinsola Akinlabi confirmed that foreigners with expired visas have from May 1 to August 1, 2025, to voluntarily depart without incurring penalties.
“This is a notice that a three-month period, starting from May 1 to August 1, 2025, has been granted to allow foreign nationals with expired visas to return to their countries without facing consequences,” Akinlabi stated.
Additionally, the new directive outlines that starting August 2, 2025, foreigners who have overstayed their visas for over a year will be permanently banned from entering Nigeria.
Earlier, Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo revealed that expatriates who overstay their visas by more than six months will be banned for five years, while those exceeding one year would face a ten-year ban and a daily fine of $15 for each day of overstay.
In a significant shift, the NIS now states that individuals who overstay by one year will face blacklisting, effectively preventing any future entry.
The updated Nigeria Visa Policy 2025 also introduces an e-Visa system, which streamlines the visa application process, reducing wait times to under 48 hours and ensuring enhanced security. This new policy will be fully implemented by May 1, 2025.
