Earlier reports revealed that military personnel stormed the company’s headquarters on Thursday morning, creating chaos at the facility. Eyewitnesses stated that armed officers, clad in military uniforms, arrived at the Ikeja premises, opposite MITV in Lagos, around 7:40 am. It was also alleged that employees and others present at the office were subjected to physical assault.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Ikeja Electric’s spokesperson, Kingsley Okotie, condemned the invasion, stating that the harassment from the Nigerian Navy made it difficult for staff to carry out their duties. Okotie clarified that the disconnection of the military premises was not solely due to unpaid bills but also involved operational concerns, including serious safety issues for their staff.
“The disconnection was not just about non-payment. There are operational factors involved, including significant safety concerns for our staff. We’ve faced incidents of harassment, which are making it increasingly difficult for our team to work under such conditions,” Okotie explained.
Reports also revealed that Ikeja Electric’s headquarters had been barricaded over unpaid electricity debts.
