Some prominent figures within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have voiced mixed reactions to a call made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and a group of concerned party stakeholders, advocating that the party’s 2027 presidential ticket be zoned to the South.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Wike and the stakeholders, during a meeting held in Abuja on Monday, emphasized the need for the PDP to shift its 2027 presidential candidacy to the southern region. They also reiterated their support for Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary.

Reacting to the meeting, former House of Representatives member, Jones Onyereri, criticized the last National Executive Committee (NEC) session, claiming it lacked proper organization.

According to Onyereri, the NEC meeting failed to meet constitutional standards, especially as the National Secretary, Senator Anyanwu, did not issue a formal notice to members. “Section 47 of the PDP constitution clearly states that only the National Secretary has the authority to issue party correspondence,” he noted. “In fact, Senator Anyanwu had written to confirm that the NEC meeting was cancelled. That’s the core issue—it wasn’t properly convened.”

He added that stakeholders nationwide have reaffirmed Anyanwu’s legitimacy as the party’s duly elected National Secretary. A communiqué to that effect has already been issued. “We’ve always insisted the PDP must uphold its constitution, particularly the principle of zoning,” Onyereri stressed. “And zoning the 2027 presidential ticket to the South is part of that communiqué.”

Meanwhile, former PDP Deputy National Chairman and BoT member, Chief Bode George, urged discretion, warning that publicising internal matters could harm the party. “We have a functioning national executive. Sensitive issues should not be aired publicly. A major meeting is scheduled for June 30, and until then, all members should exercise restraint,” he said. “We must avoid airing our internal disagreements in front of political opponents. Things are getting out of hand.”

Similarly, PDP’s National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature, supported the stance of Wike and his group, saying it aligns with the party’s broader objectives. “There’s nothing in their communiqué that contradicts the party’s position,” he stated. “Some people are being deliberately mischievous. The position of National Secretary is clear both legally and within the party’s framework. Ignoring that could put the PDP at risk.”
