The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reaffirmed its commitment to collaborate with security agencies in apprehending and prosecuting individuals who vandalize Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII) across the country.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

This declaration was made on Thursday during a media engagement in Abuja by the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, who was represented by Mrs. Nnena Ukoha, Deputy Director and Head of Corporate Communications at the Public Affairs Department.

The CNII includes vital computer systems, communication networks, and infrastructures, whose compromise could significantly affect the nation’s economy, public health, security, and safety.

It will be recalled that President Bola Tinubu recently signed the “Designation and Protection of Critical National Information Infrastructure Order, 2024”, designed to shield these vital systems from cyber-attacks and other disruptions.

Speaking at the event, Ukoha emphasized that the CNII Act provides legal grounds for prosecuting offenders, with operational oversight falling under the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

She stated:

“Anyone caught damaging or disrupting CNII will face prosecution. We are working closely with agencies such as the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to address this growing threat and ensure offenders are brought to justice.”

Reflecting on challenges faced by telecom operators, Maida noted that:

“Around two years ago, several key telecom operators were suffering massive financial losses. Despite rising revenues, heavy foreign exchange obligations eroded profits, leading to deteriorating service quality.”

He explained that recent tariff adjustments have helped operators return to profitability, allowing them to reinvest in their networks and improve service delivery.

“We expect a substantial increase in industry investments this year—more than what we’ve seen over the past two years,” he added.

Dr. Maida also stressed the importance of collaboration and information sharing among stakeholders to overcome industry challenges.

On the broader implications of telecom infrastructure, he said:

“Telecommunications play a critical role in national security, especially amid rising cyber threats. Without strong communication systems, effective security operations are impossible.”

He also highlighted the sector’s contribution to public welfare and the digital economy:

“Robust telecom infrastructure is the backbone of a thriving digital society. It supports social interaction, access to essential services, and economic development across every sector.”
