In a statement released on Sunday, the former Anambra State Governor clarified that the act was not for publicity or political theatrics ahead of 2027, but a sincere gesture meant to emphasize the essence of leadership — service to others.
Obi explained that the event in question was the Jubilee of Hope, a private gathering intended to remind privileged individuals of the importance of humility and compassion by literally serving those less fortunate. He noted that the footage was shared by third parties, not his team, and regretted that critics had twisted the moment for political gain.
“Leadership, to me, means service,” Obi stated. “The Jubilee of Hope is about the wealthy stepping down from their elevated positions to serve the poor — not as a performance, but as a message for the kind of empathetic and equitable society we must build.”
He revealed that many notable Nigerians, including Cardinal Onaiyekan, Senator Osita Izunaso, and Dr. A.B.C. Orjiako, also took part in the event — all without seeking media attention.
Obi added that serving others is part of his everyday life, noting that he lives simply, does his own house chores, and personally attends to his guests.
“Even as governor, I served others during official events. Today, I don’t keep a househelp. I clean, I cook, and I serve. It’s not strategy — it’s who I am.”
He urged Nigerians not to trivialize the message behind the act, warning against reducing it to mere political optics. Instead, he called for a national culture rooted in compassion, humility, and responsibility.
“If we truly want to build a New Nigeria, we must remember the hungry, the forgotten, and the poor. Service must not be seasonal or symbolic — it should be our lifestyle.”
Obi concluded by urging public office holders, business leaders, and everyday citizens to actively uplift others, adding that hope should not be an occasional luxury, but a daily right for all Nigerians.
