Currently, the All Progressives Congress (APC), which controls power at the federal level, has continued to consolidate its strength in the 10th National Assembly, where it already enjoys majority status.
According to official results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after the August 16 bye-elections, the APC further widened its influence, securing 71 seats in the Senate. Out of 16 federal constituencies that went to the polls across 12 states, the ruling party clinched 12.
The APC has also gained from multiple defections of opposition lawmakers since the 2023 general elections. With 71 Senators, the party is now just one seat short of the 72 required for an absolute two-thirds majority in the 109-member Senate.
The current Senate composition stands at:
-
APC – 71 seats
-
PDP – 28 seats
-
Labour Party – 5 seats
-
SDP – 2 seats
-
APGA – 2 seats
-
NNPP – 1 seat
House of Representatives
In the Green Chamber, the APC has equally maintained a commanding lead, further strengthened by the outcome of the August 16 bye-elections.
From 178 members at the inauguration of the 10th House in June 2023, the APC has now grown to 205 members, largely due to a wave of defections from opposition parties.
By contrast, the PDP, which began the 10th House with 113 seats, has suffered significant losses and now holds just 37 seats, according to BusinessDay reports.
