Protest Erupts: Ibas’ Security Detail Raises Alarm Over ‘Massive Govt House Expenditure
Tension broke out at the Rivers State Government House in Port Harcourt on Wednesday as security operatives attached to the seat of power staged a protest over alleged neglect, poor welfare, and six months of unpaid allowances under the outgoing Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The protest, which erupted around 10 a.m., briefly disrupted activities, with the aggrieved operatives threatening to block Ibas’ convoy from heading to the Port Harcourt International Airport.
The protesters—mainly personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)—accused the interim administration of abandoning them despite their loyalty and sacrifices.
In a viral video, one operative was heard lamenting: “For what? They have made billions. Imagine, for six months we have been suffering, working hard here without pay. We will not agree. We will lock this place and nobody will go out.”
Another fumed: “Do you know how much has been going out of this Government House, and they didn’t give us anything? If it is politicians, they share freely, so they should also settle us.”
Attempts by a Government House official to calm the situation failed, as the operatives rebuffed him, accusing the administration of ignoring their plight.
Normalcy was eventually restored following the intervention of senior security officers, after which Ibas’ convoy was allowed to proceed to the airport for his Abuja trip.
When contacted, the media aide to the Sole Administrator, Hector Igbikiowubo, told Punch that an official statement would be issued, though none had been released as of press time.
