In a ruling delivered by Justice Kolawole Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, the PDP was ordered to suspend preparations for its convention, scheduled for November 15–16, citing procedural breaches. The court further directed the party to issue the statutory 21-day notice before proceeding.
The order followed a suit filed by three PDP officials — Imo State Chairman Austin Nwachukwu, Abia State Chairman Amah Nnanna, and South-South PDP Secretary Turnah George — who accused the party of violating its constitution in the build-up to the event.
Responding swiftly, PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, in a statement on Friday, condemned the judgment as a “blatant attack on democracy,” but insisted that the ruling does not hinder the party’s internal processes or preparations for a successful convention.
“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is appalled by the judgment of the Federal High Court, presided over by Hon. Justice Kolawole Omotosho, describing it as an assault on Nigeria’s democratic process,” the statement read.
“The decision does not invalidate our ongoing preparations for the National Convention to elect new officers to lead the party for the next four years. The Supreme Court has already affirmed that political parties retain supremacy in managing their internal affairs,” it added.
The PDP urged its members and organs nationwide to remain calm, steadfast, and focused on ensuring a successful convention, while assuring that its legal team has been directed to appeal the judgment immediately.
“As the leading opposition party committed to the rule of law, we will take all necessary legal steps to defend multi-party democracy and protect the sanctity of internal party administration,” the statement concluded.
