Speaking during an address at Abbey College, Cambridge, United Kingdom, on Wednesday, Mohammed traced the political shift back to the aftermath of the 2003 elections, which he described as a “political tsunami” that significantly altered Nigeria’s political landscape.

He explained that while the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) initially dominated after the 1999 return to democracy, winning 21 states, the opposition parties shared the remaining states. However, he said the 2003 elections drastically reshaped the balance of power, with the PDP expanding its control while opposition parties, including the Alliance for Democracy (AD), suffered major losses.

According to him, the setback forced opposition groups to reorganize and form new alliances, eventually leading to the creation of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and later the All Progressives Congress (APC). He noted that despite limited political control at the time, the opposition relied heavily on strategic communication and messaging to remain relevant and build public support.

Mohammed added that this sustained effort in coalition-building and communication eventually made the APC a formidable opposition force, culminating in its historic victory over the PDP in 2015—the first time an incumbent ruling party was defeated at the national level in Nigeria.
