Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday in Ibadan, the state capital, Makinde criticised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, insisting that political support should be a matter of personal choice and not imposition.

He stressed that Wike has no authority to dictate the political decisions of others.

Makinde recounted a meeting involving President Tinubu, Wike, and other political figures, during which the former Rivers State governor allegedly stated that he would “hold” the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 polls.

The Oyo governor said the comment came as a shock to him and made it clear that he would not be part of such an arrangement.

According to Makinde, his refusal to back Tinubu in 2027 is driven by a commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy, ensuring the PDP remains a strong and viable opposition party, and preventing the country from sliding into a one-party system.

He further clarified that President Tinubu did not ask Wike to take control of the PDP on his behalf, but that the offer was made voluntarily by the FCT minister.

“I was in a meeting with President Tinubu, Nyesom Wike, and others when Wike volunteered to hold the PDP for Tinubu in 2027, and I was shocked,” Makinde said. “Wike is free to support the president, but I will not.”

Both Wike and Makinde were members of the G5 Governors who openly supported Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) against their party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in the 2023 election.

However, following Tinubu’s victory, the relationship between the two governors has deteriorated, with each now aligned with opposing factions within the PDP.
