The annual Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, organised by the Ministry of Defence, is dedicated to honouring officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.
The ceremony commemorates personnel who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, peacekeeping missions, and various internal security operations across the country.
Special recognition was given to troops who have fallen in the ongoing fight against terrorism and insurgency, which the Federal Government has identified as a major threat to Nigeria’s unity and stability.
Beyond honouring the fallen, the event also celebrates surviving veterans and serves as a platform to rally financial and moral support for their welfare.
It equally provides an avenue to assist the families of deceased service members, many of whom continue to shoulder the lasting impact of their loved ones’ sacrifices.
While Armed Forces Remembrance Day is observed worldwide, Nigeria’s commemoration carries unique national significance.
As a Commonwealth member, Nigeria initially marked Remembrance Day on November 11, in line with other member nations, to honour victims of the World Wars.
The date—symbolising the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month—marks the end of the First World War in 1918.
Nigeria later adopted January 15 to coincide with the end of the Nigerian Civil War, making the observance more reflective of the country’s history and experience.
The 2026 edition of the event is particularly significant, coming at a time when the Armed Forces have recorded notable successes in the North-East and other regions.
The occasion offered an opportunity to commend the bravery, professionalism and dedication of military personnel confronting the nation’s security challenges in pursuit of peace and stability.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its appreciation for the Armed Forces and called on citizens, organisations and the private sector to continue supporting military personnel.
According to the government, sustained backing for the Armed Forces remains vital to national security and lasting peace in Nigeria.
