El-Rufai explained that the visit, which included participation in the Friday Jumaat prayers and a shared meal with the former President, had no political undertones. He emphasized that it was a gesture of unity and brotherhood, providing an opportunity to reconnect with a respected mentor.
In a post shared on his official account, El-Rufai subtly addressed critics and political rivals, stating that the visit was not driven by any political agenda.
He wrote:
“Former VP Atiku Abubakar, former Governors Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Achike Udenwa (Imo), Gabriel Suswam (Benue), and I, among others, visited Kaduna to pay post-Sallah respects to former President Muhammadu Buhari. We joined fellow Muslims for Jumaat prayers at Yahaya Road Mosque and later enjoyed a delicious lunch at Buhari’s residence.
“To our critics and political adversaries, rest easy—this visit had nothing to do with politics. It was simply about unity, brotherhood, and reconnecting with a mentor. Since we’re all supposedly ‘politically irrelevant,’ we just prayed and ate lunch together.”
Earlier, it was reported that Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, led the delegation to Buhari’s Kaduna residence. In his own post via on April 11, 2025, Atiku noted that as the Waziri of Adamawa, it was his tradition to be home during Sallah.
He described the meeting with Buhari as delightful, adding humorously that the former President had him laughing so hard his ribs ached.
