Why Voters Stayed Away: Sowore Reveals Sh*cking Reasons Behind FCT Election Apathy
The 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoleye Sowore, has blamed the low voter turnout at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections on the signing of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill into law by President Bola Tinubu.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking to Vanguard on Saturday at Polling Unit 001, LEA Primary School, Kabusa, in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Sowore said that many Nigerians have lost confidence in the electoral process.
According to the human rights activist, the lack of trust in elections was predictable, which is why he and others had warned about the National Assembly’s handling of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
He explained, “What we have discovered is that more and more people are no longer voting, and I think this was worsened by the newly signed electoral law, which fails to provide the transparency that democracy requires. Democracy needs one thing above all—trust.
“The moment trust is lost, people stay at home. Voting takes time, effort, and resources, and if citizens feel their votes won’t produce the results they expect, they simply don’t leave their homes.
“That’s what we were warning about when the Electoral Act was being amended—not just for activists, but for the future of the country. If you want people to have faith in democracy, you must give them what they deserve, and that is true democratic integrity. I’m here today because Kabusa is one of my communities.”
Sowore also noted that the FCT elections are not the primary focus of Nigerians, who are looking ahead to the 2027 general elections.
He added, “This is not the election that will define the future; 2027 is the pivotal race. To make a difference, you must equip yourself not with weapons, but with knowledge, intellect, commitment, and the conviction to change the course of history in this country.”
