Nigeria will now miss consecutive World Cups, with the 2026 tournament set to take place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The absence of the three-time African champions has sparked concerns about the team’s long-term planning and player development.

The team’s struggles date back to their elimination by Ghana’s Black Stars in the play-offs for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Their hopes of bouncing back were dashed again in November 2025 when the side, under coach Éric Chelle, lost on penalties to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the African play-off final.

Bonfrere stressed that the setback should serve as a lesson rather than something to dwell on. He urged the Nigeria Football Federation to address the mistakes that led to the failure and begin structured planning for the 2030 and 2034 World Cups, starting with preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

He also noted that Nigeria boasts a wealth of talented players competing at top European clubs, warning that it would be unfortunate for such a generation to miss out on three consecutive World Cups.
