Leading figures of the African Democratic Congress, along with supporters, staged a protest at the Independent National Electoral Commission headquarters in Abuja, opposing the commission’s decision to derecognise the party’s leadership.
In a Facebook post, Ossai expressed displeasure over Melaye’s choice of outfit at a protest aimed at demanding better governance. He argued that such a costly item was inappropriate given the context.
According to Ossai, the value of the T-shirt alone could provide employment opportunities for many young Nigerians.
He wrote, “I am disappointed in Dino Melaye for wearing a Fendi shirt worth £1,426, equivalent to ₦2.6 million, to a protest ground while calling for a better Nigeria. That T-shirt could create jobs for hundreds of youths. I am really disappointed.”
Meanwhile, the ADC has intensified its standoff with INEC following a major protest held in Abuja.
In a symbolic move, the demonstration began with the singing of Nigeria’s former national anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots,” before protesters marched to INEC’s headquarters to submit a strongly worded letter addressed to the commission’s chairman, Joseph Amupitan.
In the letter dated April 8, 2026, the party outlined several serious allegations, legal arguments, and political concerns.
Key points raised by the ADC include:
1. Demand for Immediate Resignation or Removal
The party made a firm demand for the INEC Chairman to either resign or be removed from office, citing alleged gross misconduct, abuse of power, and constitutional violations. It argued that the credibility of INEC is at risk.
2. Allegations of Partisanship
The ADC accused the commission, under Amupitan’s leadership, of abandoning neutrality. It claimed INEC’s actions suggest bias toward certain factions, which could erode public confidence in the electoral system and threaten the fairness of future elections.
3. Constitutional Overreach
The party also criticised the chairman for allegedly interpreting court rulings publicly. It maintained that only the judiciary has the authority to interpret its judgments, and warned that such actions breach the principle of separation of powers.
