A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Kenneth Okonkwo, has claimed that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi avoids competitive primary elections due to what he described as a deep reluctance to face internal party contests.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Okonkwo said Obi’s exit from the ADC was not caused by ideological differences or internal disputes, but rather his preference for avoiding open and competitive primaries.

He alleged that Obi has consistently steered clear of direct party contests throughout his political journey, instead relying on negotiated arrangements.

According to him, “Peter Obi is afraid of free and fair primary elections. He gave reasons for the challenges, but his main reason is that he does not want to face the primary election.”

Okonkwo further claimed that Obi has never participated in a true competitive primary and, in his view, is unlikely to do so before the end of his political career.

In a separate comment, Okonkwo also criticised Senate President Godswill Akpabio over remarks suggesting that the opposition coalition is collapsing.

Akpabio had made the comment during a Senate plenary session while announcing the defection of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, stating that repeated defections made the opposition situation appear unstable.

Responding during an interview on Arise Television, Okonkwo dismissed Akpabio’s remarks and accused him of presiding over what he described as a dysfunctional National Assembly.

He argued that the real institutional failure lies within the legislature under Akpabio’s leadership, not in the opposition parties.

Okonkwo added that instead of focusing on the opposition, the Senate President should address what he called the challenges facing Nigerians under the current legislative leadership.
