Explosive Politics In 2027: Fubara–Wike Reconciliation Deal In Jeopardy Amid Impeachment Threats
The political peace agreement between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike is reportedly under serious strain as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Both political figures are said to have resumed rivalry over who will succeed Fubara as governor of Rivers State, raising fears that their reconciliation deal may collapse.
The tension is linked to a peace arrangement reportedly facilitated by President Bola Tinubu, which allegedly included an understanding that Fubara would not seek re-election in 2027 and would align with the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Fubara had earlier defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in December, a move widely interpreted as an attempt to ease ongoing impeachment pressures from the state House of Assembly.
However, fresh political controversy emerged on Tuesday when a group of elders led by Awaji Inombek Abiante purchased governorship nomination forms on behalf of Fubara, sparking claims that the governor may be breaching the alleged agreement with Wike.
In a counter-development, allies of Wike also entered the race. Dax George-Kelly reportedly obtained an APC governorship form, while Kingsley Chinda picked up a PDP nomination form.
Another aspirant, Tonye Patrick Cole of the APC, also joined the contest. Cole, who previously contested unsuccessfully in both 2019 and 2023, has declared that he will not step down for any candidate.
Political analysts note that while Cole may have limited grassroots strength, George-Kelly and Chinda could pose stronger challenges due to their political ties within Wike’s network and influence across key ethnic blocs in the state.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that Fubara has backed about 32 aspirants seeking seats in the Rivers State House of Assembly, a move seen as an effort to consolidate legislative support. These candidates are said to include loyalists such as former Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo and ex–Obio/Akpor chairman Chijioke Ihunwo.
One supporter was quoted as saying, “Fubara bought 32 forms for his foot soldiers to contest all the seats in the Assembly.”
The development has reportedly unsettled lawmakers aligned with Wike, with sources indicating that impeachment proceedings could be revived when the House reconvenes, citing alleged constitutional breaches involving budget and executive decisions.
Despite the rising tensions, some political observers believe Fubara may still enjoy backing within the APC structure, pointing to the influence of figures such as Hope Uzodimma, who chairs the APC screening committee, as well as support from other APC governors.
There are also reports that some governors are urging President Tinubu to intervene and caution Wike over concerns that escalating tensions could destabilise the APC in Rivers State.
Wike had earlier declared during a tour of the state’s 23 local government areas that he would not repeat what he described as past political mistakes and would play a decisive role in determining who becomes Rivers State governor in 2027.
