Fresh Political Buzz: First Lady Tinubu Claps Back At Critics, Says ‘It’s Not Only Akara
Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has defended the Federal Government’s support for small-scale entrepreneurs, insisting that the administration will remain committed to empowering traders in the informal sector despite criticism of its economic intervention programmes.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Mrs. Tinubu made the remarks while responding to reactions that followed her recent comments encouraging Nigerians to explore low-capital businesses such as selling akara, roasted corn and kuli-kuli as a means of earning a living.
Speaking to journalists in a video circulating on social media, the First Lady explained that the government’s intervention focuses on providing grants to small business owners rather than loans, with the aim of helping them grow their businesses.
Her earlier comments, however, sparked widespread debate online, with many Nigerians arguing that the examples she cited did not adequately reflect the severity of the country’s current economic challenges.
Responding to the backlash, Mrs. Tinubu maintained that the government would not be distracted by criticism or what she described as misleading reports.
She stressed that the empowerment programme is not limited to akara sellers but extends to a broad range of petty traders, including those selling tomatoes, peppers, vegetables, roasted plantain (boli) and other everyday items in local markets.
According to the First Lady, the beneficiaries of the initiative understand its value and will continue to appreciate the government’s efforts, adding that the administration remains focused on supporting grassroots entrepreneurs and will not be discouraged by negative reactions.
