In the clip, which lasts less than three minutes, the man identified as Newton Isokpehi criticised the directive permitting citizens to film police officers during public operations.

Speaking in Pidgin English, the officer warned that he would shoot anyone who attempted to record him while carrying out his duties, including passengers inside a vehicle.

In the viral video, Isokpehi said any senior police officer who encouraged Nigerians to record officers on duty should be prepared to take responsibility for the consequences.

“Any day I’m on duty as an officer while holding my rifle, let someone video me. That oga who gave the order that police officers should be filmed, he will do your burial. I will kill anyone who films me on duty,” he said.

The officer claimed he had spent 26 years serving in the Nigeria Police Force.

He also complained about what he described as poor welfare and difficult working conditions faced by police officers in the country.

According to him, the current police leadership under Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, was making efforts to improve officers’ welfare.

Isokpehi is also active on TikTok through the handle @actor459, where he frequently shares videos of himself wearing police uniforms.

His uniforms in some of the videos reportedly bear the name “Newton Isokpehi.”

Meanwhile, a Federal High Court sitting in Delta State had earlier ruled that Nigerians have the right to record police officers conducting stop-and-search operations in public places.

Justice Hyeladzira Nganjiwa gave the ruling in March while delivering judgment in a fundamental rights suit filed by lawyer Maxwell Nosakhare Uwaifo.

The court held that citizens are constitutionally allowed to record police officers while carrying out their official duties.

Similarly, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, stated in April that police officers should not fear being recorded if they conduct themselves professionally and within the law.
