The Arsenal manager admitted he could not bear to sit through Bournemouth’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City on Tuesday night—a result that officially confirmed the club’s first league triumph in 22 years.

While the squad gathered at the training ground to watch the game together, Arteta quietly left before kick-off.

“You probably don’t realise it. It’s one of the best feelings I’ve ever had,” he said.

“I was supposed to be watching the game with the boys and the staff because that’s what they wanted, but I couldn’t.”

Instead, the Spaniard went home and tried to distract himself in his garden.

“I went to the garden, started to build a fire and had a barbecue and I didn’t watch any of it,” he explained.

“I was just hearing some noises in the living room and suddenly the magic happened.

“My oldest son opened the garden door, ran towards me crying, hugged me, and said: ‘We are champions, daddy’.

“Then my other two boys and my wife came over, and it was beautiful. Seeing that joy in them, knowing they are always with me, it was magical. A minute later, Martin [Odegaard] called me on video.”

Arteta also disclosed that he personally called Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola after the match to express gratitude for his role in Arsenal’s title success.

The two share roots in the Basque region and both came through the Antiguoko youth system in San Sebastián.

“I didn’t message him, I rang him. I called firstly to congratulate him on the incredible job he has done with Bournemouth,” Arteta said.

“I told him he almost took the Premier League away from us and then helped us win it.”

Iraola is expected to leave Bournemouth at the end of the season, and Arteta said their conversation was filled with respect and admiration.

Arsenal now turn their attention to the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest on 30 May, with a potential historic double still on the line.

“We want to have the parade with two trophies,” Arteta said.

“We had 48 hours to enjoy winning the league, now we must prepare properly and raise our standards to compete at the highest level.

“We will have a short moment to celebrate with the fans, then six days to write new history for this football club.”
