Unlike the 2022 primary, which featured intense internal competition involving figures such as then Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, analysts say the current process has been relatively smooth for the President.

With the party ticket now firmly in his possession, attention has shifted to whether Tinubu will retain Vice President Kashim Shettima or select a new deputy ahead of the election.

Tinubu’s choice of Shettima in 2022 attracted controversy due to both men being Muslims, raising debates about religious balance in national leadership.

At the time, critics argued that a Muslim-Muslim ticket did not reflect Nigeria’s religious diversity, especially amid wider political concerns.

However, as the 2027 elections approach, observers say that controversy appears to have reduced in intensity.

Some analysts believe the influence of First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, a Christian pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, has helped ease earlier tensions surrounding the ticket arrangement.

Reports suggest that Shettima’s loyalty remains a major factor in discussions around his political future.

He is widely described by analysts as a highly loyal deputy who has consistently defended and supported the Tinubu administration without public disagreement or internal conflict.

Observers note that the Vice President has carefully aligned himself with the President’s political style, strengthening perceptions of trust and reliability within the presidency.

Another key factor is Shettima’s political influence in northern Nigeria, which analysts say could be crucial to the APC’s electoral strategy.

They warn that replacing him could carry political risks, particularly given his established support base in the region.

Political commentators also point to the cordial relationship between First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu and the Vice President’s wife, Nana Shettima, as a stabilising influence within the administration.

Both women have worked closely on initiatives such as the Renewed Hope Initiative, which focuses on empowerment for women and girls, with Nana Shettima playing an active role in its programmes.

Despite ongoing political discussions and speculation, many observers believe it would be unexpected for Tinubu to replace Shettima ahead of the 2027 elections—though they also acknowledge that Nigerian politics remains highly unpredictable.
