Akume gave the assurance on Sunday during the National Inter-Denominational Church Service held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja as part of activities commemorating the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

According to a statement issued by the SGF’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Akume also reiterated the government’s determination to confront terrorism, banditry and other forms of criminality across the country.

Speaking on behalf of President Tinubu, Akume congratulated Nigerians on 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance since 1999, describing the milestone as a reflection of the resilience, sacrifices and commitment of citizens who fought for the return of democratic rule.

The President paid tribute to heroes of the June 12 democracy struggle, acknowledging the sacrifices made by many who endured persecution, injuries and even death in pursuit of democratic governance.

Akume stated that the administration understands the difficulties many Nigerians are experiencing and is taking deliberate steps to address them.

“Government is sensitive to these pains, shares in these pains and has heard the cries of Nigerians,” he said, adding that President Tinubu is tackling the challenges with compassion and a strong sense of responsibility.

He further stressed that the government would not yield to terrorism, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation.

On the security situation, the President described recent attacks and abductions in parts of the country as unfortunate reminders of the work that still needs to be done. However, he assured Nigerians that securing the release of those still in captivity remains a top priority.

He noted that security agencies continue to receive the support and resources required to safeguard lives, protect communities and defend the nation’s territorial integrity.

Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Akume urged Nigerians to reject violence, hate speech and divisive politics, emphasizing that democracy should not become a platform for conflict.

He particularly appealed to young people to resist being used for political violence, misinformation, ethnic hostility or religious intolerance.

According to him, no political interest is worth sacrificing one’s values, future or conscience.

President Tinubu also called on religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society groups, the media and families to promote peace, tolerance and national unity as the country approaches another election season.

He equally commended members of the armed forces and other security agencies for their dedication and sacrifices in protecting Nigeria’s democracy.

Among those who attended the service were Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack.
