The Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, made this known on Monday during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
The victims, Mrs. Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul and her 12-year-old twin sons, Peter and Paul, were kidnapped on June 3 along the Elewura axis of Ring Road, Ibadan, while she was reportedly taking them to school.
They were later rescued in a coordinated operation that resulted in the killing of two suspects and the arrest of several others.
Ayanlade stated that the rescue mission was carried out on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and coordinated by the Oyo State Police Command alongside operatives of the Force Intelligence Department’s Intelligence Response Team.
He disclosed that one of the suspects, known as “Ololu,” had previously been on the command’s watchlist before his arrest after sustained surveillance.
According to him, following Ololu’s arrest and interrogation, another suspect identified as Dare, also known as “Solution,” was apprehended in Ibadan.
Alleged Inside Collaboration
The police spokesman alleged that the kidnapping plot began in May when one of the suspects approached a personal assistant associated with the family, identified as Shehu, to obtain sensitive information.
Ayanlade claimed the aide provided details about the family’s lifestyle, daily routines, and movements, which were used to plan the operation.
He said the initial plan was to abduct the mother, but the kidnappers altered their strategy after discovering that a driver usually transported the children to school.
The gang reportedly proceeded with the operation on the day Mrs. John-Paul personally drove her children.
He explained that the victims were later tracked to a hideout in the Ayegbule area of Ibadan on June 6 at about 7:30 p.m.
During the rescue operation, one of the suspects, identified as Kelechi, who allegedly travelled from Lagos, opened fire on the operatives. Police responded, killing him and another accomplice who was providing cover.
Ayanlade said weapons were recovered from the scene, while the victims were rescued unharmed.
When asked whether the case had political undertones or was financially motivated, he said investigations were still ongoing and declined to draw conclusions.
He added that efforts were underway to apprehend fleeing members of the gang, noting that six individuals were involved in the operation, four of whom were present at the scene.
The police spokesman assured that all those connected to the kidnapping, including any sponsors or collaborators, would be identified, arrested, and prosecuted.
