Organised labour has warned that it may embark on a nationwide shutdown if the escalating cases of terrorism, banditry, and kidnappings across Nigeria are not urgently addressed.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The warning was issued jointly by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) during a press briefing at the ongoing 114th International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

The labour unions said the worsening security situation now poses a serious threat to the safety, livelihoods, and productivity of Nigerian workers.

According to them, workers across the country are increasingly exposed to danger, with many unable to travel, conduct business, or carry out daily activities without fear of attacks.

They stressed that sustainable economic growth and improved workers’ welfare cannot be achieved in an environment where communities remain under constant threat from armed groups and criminal elements.

The NLC and TUC warned that organised labour would not hesitate to take industrial action if authorities fail to demonstrate stronger commitment to safeguarding lives and property.

They urged both federal and state governments to prioritise national security and economic stability, cautioning that continued neglect of workers’ concerns could provoke a stronger response from the labour movement.

Labour Rejects ₦100,000 Minimum Wage Claims

The unions also dismissed reports suggesting ongoing negotiations around a proposed ₦100,000 minimum wage, describing such claims by some state governors as misleading.

They clarified that no agreement has been reached on that figure, and that discussions on workers’ remuneration are still ongoing.

The NLC and TUC emphasised that the reports do not reflect the current state of negotiations regarding labour welfare and compensation.
