Matawalle stated that insecurity has become a national concern requiring the combined efforts of security agencies, citizens, and community leaders.
The former Governor of Zamfara State made the remarks during an interview with BBC Hausa while reacting to recent killings and abductions in parts of the country.
He urged Nigerians to remain prayerful and continue supporting security operatives working to combat terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.
According to him, insecurity affects all Nigerians regardless of political, religious, or regional differences.
Matawalle called on citizens to rise above political divisions and collaborate in efforts to restore peace and stability across the country.
“It is heartbreaking, and we must all ensure that security agencies and citizens work together to end insecurity. It does not discriminate based on party or religion; anyone can be affected,” he said.
He also advised Nigerians to provide useful intelligence to security agencies and avoid actions that could worsen tensions in the country.
The minister further accused some opposition figures of politicising the security situation for political gain.
He condemned what he described as attempts to use insecurity to incite citizens against the government, saying such actions undermine national efforts to address the crisis.
“That is why we have urged the opposition to stop using insecurity to incite people. Some are more interested in discrediting the government than helping to solve the problem,” he said.
Matawalle added that insecurity should not be used as a political tool or for scoring partisan points.
“It is only God that can bring an end to this insecurity, alongside our collective prayers and efforts. It should not be used as a weapon for political attacks,” he stated.
Nigeria has recently experienced renewed security challenges, including attacks and abductions in states such as Oyo and Borno.
In Oyo State, gunmen reportedly attacked schools in Oriire Local Government Area and abducted 39 students and seven teachers. In Borno State, 42 pupils were also abducted during an attack in Mussa, Askira-Uba Local Government Area.
These incidents have heightened public concern over the safety of schools and vulnerable communities.
Minister Raises Concern Over Fake Videos
Matawalle also expressed concern over the circulation of misleading and outdated videos on social media, allegedly used to suggest that insecurity has worsened under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
He said some of the clips being shared were recorded during previous administrations or taken from other countries.
“There are fake and recycled videos circulating, some from the Jonathan era and others from countries like Burkina Faso and Mali, yet they are being misrepresented as recent incidents in Nigeria,” he said.
He urged Nigerians to verify information before sharing content related to national security.
Matawalle insisted that security agencies are working tirelessly across the country to confront terrorists and criminal groups, noting that the challenge cannot be resolved overnight.
“Our security operatives are working across the country. We have directed them to deal decisively with terrorists, but this is not something that can end immediately,” he said.
He appealed for patience, unity, and continuous prayers from Nigerians, stressing that collective effort is essential to achieving lasting peace.
The minister also called on political leaders, religious figures, traditional rulers, and citizens to prioritize national interest over partisan differences, while supporting ongoing security operations to restore stability.
