Alex Ekubo passed away on May 11, 2026, at the age of 40 following a private battle with metastatic kidney cancer, according to his family.

Speaking during an Instagram Live session, Daddy Freeze argued that the atmosphere of the memorial event shifted from a reflective gathering to what he described as a concert after Mercy Chinwo took the stage.

According to him, funeral services and memorial gatherings should feature soft, comforting music that helps mourners reflect, rather than energetic performances. He questioned the choice of songs rendered during the event and suggested that traditional hymns would have been more suitable.

Daddy Freeze also expressed reservations about the participation of multiple guest artists leading worship sessions, maintaining that memorial services should preserve a calm and reverent atmosphere.

Explaining why he left the event, he said:

“Mercy Chinwo climbed the pulpit and turned the place into a concert. At that point, I got up and left. People are talking about me not following the dress code, but my question is: doesn’t Mercy Chinwo have soft songs? Do people understand what a funeral is? The kind of music that should be played at a funeral is soft music. They should have sung hymns. I would have been more moved if I had heard hymns.”

His comments have since sparked debate on social media, with opinions divided over the appropriate style of music for funeral and memorial services.
