The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has dismissed reports suggesting that it is planning to dissolve its structure in support of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential aspirant, Peter Obi, and his potential running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The NNPP National Chairman, Bala Yusuf, clarified the party’s position during an interview with Punch, held on the sidelines of the party’s 11th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja.

Yusuf stated that the party has not entered into any form of agreement with Kwankwaso, the NDC, or any other political platform.

In the past six months, the NNPP has experienced significant political shifts, including the loss of its sole elected governor, Abba Yusuf of Kano State, along with most of his appointees, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The party also saw its former presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and former National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, move to the NDC.

Despite these developments, Yusuf maintained that Kwankwaso’s exit does not justify claims that the NNPP is ready to surrender or collapse its structure for any individual or political party.

He also noted that the party’s decision not to present a presidential candidate in the 2027 elections should not be misinterpreted as endorsement of any aspirant or party.

According to him, “This is just a perception held by some people. As a party, we have resolved not to field a presidential candidate because there are over 20 registered political parties under INEC, and not all of them must field candidates for the sake of it.

“Furthermore, we are not collapsing our structure for the NDC or any other party. The fact that our former presidential candidate, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, joined the NDC is not sufficient reason for us to dissolve our structure for him or anyone else.”

On possible alliances, Yusuf explained that the NNPP remains open to supporting credible leadership rather than insisting on fielding a presidential candidate at all costs.

“What matters is not just producing a presidential candidate. Nigeria is going through a very difficult period, and we need capable and focused leadership. We are open to assessing what other parties present,” he said.

He added that the NNPP would carefully evaluate candidates from other parties based on merit before making any alliance decision.

“We will examine whether there are viable, presentable, and qualified candidates. If none meets our expectations, then it is not compulsory for us to field a candidate,” he said.

Yusuf further noted that any future collaboration would depend on alignment of ideology and party manifestos.

“We will review all options and decide on possible partnerships. At the moment, we are not committed to any specific party. However, if another party’s constitution and manifesto align with ours, we are open to working together,” he added.
