Viral Video Sparks Outrage As Officer Allegedly Drinks Hennessy While On Patrol

In the footage circulating on social media, the officer is seen taking sips from the bottle while engaging with occupants of a stationary vehicle. During the interaction, he appears to call out figures as one of the vehicle’s occupants operates a mobile phone, leading to speculation that a financial transaction or solicitation may have been taking place.

The incident has sparked public concern, as such conduct appears to violate provisions of the Nigeria Police Act, 2021.

Section 100(1) of the Act prohibits police officers from consuming alcohol, psychotropic substances, or stimulants while on duty. The law further stipulates that any officer found in violation of the provision is liable to disciplinary action in accordance with established police procedures.

“While on duty, a police officer shall not take any intoxicating liquor, psychotropic substances, or stimulants; where he does, he shall be punished in accordance with the police disciplinary procedures,” the Act states.

Reacting to the video on X, the Nigeria Police Force’s New Media Officer, Aliyu Giwa, confirmed that the police leadership is aware of the incident and has commenced efforts to identify the officer involved.

According to Giwa, authorities are working to determine the officer’s identity, establish the location where the incident occurred, and clarify the circumstances surrounding the video.

“The Force leadership is aware of a viral video that appears to show a police officer allegedly soliciting financial gratification and drinking from a bottle believed to contain alcohol while interacting with vehicle occupants,” he said.

“We are working to identify the officer, determine the location, and clarify the circumstances of the incident. The Force assures the public that appropriate action will follow the outcome of the inquiry.”

The police spokesperson added that further steps would be taken based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
