Doctor Who Evaluated Nnamdi Kanu Reportedly Arrested, Raises Fresh Questions
Lawyer Maxwell Opara has alleged that Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji, a medical expert who reportedly carried out an independent assessment of the health of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, has been arrested.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Opara, the professor was taken into custody at his residence in Independence Layout, Enugu State, on Friday, July 3, 2026.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the lawyer claimed that Aghaji had prepared independent medical reports on Kanu’s health, which he said differed from an earlier medical assessment reportedly presented by the Department of State Services (DSS).
“Information available to me indicates that Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji, who reportedly conducted an independent medical evaluation of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, was arrested at his residence in Independence Layout, Enugu, on July 3, 2026,” Opara stated.
The lawyer did not identify the security agency allegedly responsible for the arrest, nor did he indicate whether any formal charges had been brought against the professor.
Opara appealed to relevant professional bodies and civil society organisations to closely monitor the situation and ensure that the rule of law is upheld.
He specifically called on the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and civil society groups to ensure that no individual is subjected to intimidation for carrying out professional duties or expressing expert opinions.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force, nor any other security agency had officially confirmed or denied the alleged arrest.
The development comes amid ongoing court proceedings involving Kanu, whose detention and health status have continued to attract public attention and legal scrutiny.
According to Sahara Reporters, an earlier independent medical assessment reportedly commissioned by the Nigerian Medical Association raised concerns about Kanu’s health, citing symptoms including fatigue, blurred vision, chest pain, difficulty urinating, recurrent nosebleeds and numbness in his limbs.
