The approved allocations are expected to enhance policing operations, strengthen security across the country and improve critical infrastructure for the Nigeria Police Force.

The approvals followed the presentation of separate reports by the Senate Committee on Police Affairs during plenary on Thursday.

Acting Chairman of the committee, Senator Yunus Akintunde, who represents Oyo Central, presented the reports on behalf of the committee’s chairman, Senator Abdulhamid Ahmed Mallam-Madori of Jigawa East.

While presenting the report on the 2025 budget, Akintunde explained that the proposal was a re-submission of a budget initially approved for implementation during the 2024 fiscal year but stalled due to legal issues surrounding proposed amendments to the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (Establishment) Act, 2019.

He said the delay prevented the Fund from implementing the earlier appropriation, making it necessary to present the budget again for legislative approval as the 2025 spending plan.

Following the committee’s recommendation, the Senate unanimously approved the ₦170.10 billion appropriation.

During the debate, Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi (Bauchi Central) described the Police Trust Fund as a vital intervention established to bridge the funding gap within the Nigeria Police Force.

He expressed concern that legal disputes had prevented the Fund from utilising previously appropriated resources for nearly three years.

According to Ningi, the National Assembly expects the Fund to ensure that every approved allocation is transparently and effectively utilised, adding that lawmakers would closely monitor the implementation of the budget.

The Senate also approved the Nigeria Police Trust Fund’s 2026 budget proposal of ₦233.96 billion.

Presenting the report, the committee disclosed that more than 90 per cent of the proposed expenditure was allocated to capital projects, with the remainder earmarked for recurrent expenses.

Senate Chief Whip, Mohammed Tahir Monguno, praised the spending framework, saying it reflected a strong commitment to improving the operational capacity of the police.

He urged other Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to adopt a similar budgeting approach that prioritises capital investment over recurrent expenditure.

Presiding over the session, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin commended the committee for its work and expressed confidence that the approved funds would enhance the operational effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Force.

He said the resources should be deployed to strengthen efforts to combat insecurity, including kidnapping, banditry and terrorism.

The Nigeria Police Trust Fund was established to provide additional financial support for the Nigeria Police Force through investments in training, operational logistics, infrastructure, equipment procurement and other capacity-building initiatives.
