Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has revealed that genotype compatibility was an important factor he considered before marrying his wife, fellow singer Simi.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the singer made the disclosure during an appearance on the One54 Africa Podcast while discussing sickle cell disease and the need for greater awareness about genotype compatibility among couples.

Adekunle Gold stressed the importance of couples knowing their genotype before committing to marriage and starting a family. He expressed concern about the potential health implications for children when partners have certain incompatible genotypes.

Reflecting on his own relationship with Simi, the singer said they established their genotype status early in their relationship and discovered that they were compatible.

According to Adekunle Gold, Simi is genotype AA, while he said he would not have proceeded with the marriage if she had been SS.

He explained that genotype testing was among the things they considered when their relationship became serious, describing compatibility as an important part of their decision to build a family together.

The singer also called for increased public education about sickle cell disease, stressing that love should not be the only consideration when couples are making decisions about marriage and having children.

Adekunle Gold’s comments have renewed conversations about genotype testing, sickle cell awareness and the importance of couples understanding their genetic compatibility before starting a family. The singer has previously used his platform to promote greater awareness of sickle cell disease through his foundation.
