“I Don’t Want Anybody To Rush Their Time — Rema Opens Up On Protecting Young Fans

Nigerian Afrobeats star Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has explained why he is cautious about displaying his wealth and achievements on social media, saying he does not want young people to feel pressured or inadequate while pursuing their dreams.

The singer made this known during an interview with Jam FM, where he discussed his influence on young people and the responsibility he feels as someone many admire and look up to.

Rema explained that his success could influence how young people perceive their own progress, particularly those who compare their lives with the achievements of others. He said he deliberately avoids excessively showcasing his lifestyle because he does not want his accomplishments to make others feel unsuccessful.

According to the singer, everyone has their own time to achieve their goals, but some young people may be tempted to rush their progress when they see others their age succeeding.

He noted that although some people have advised him not to worry about the impact of his lifestyle on others, he remains concerned that displaying too much wealth could create unnecessary pressure on his younger fans.

Rema also highlighted the role parents play in putting pressure on children, particularly when they compare them with others or insist that they pursue careers primarily because of their earning potential.

He observed that some young people end up studying courses they have little interest in because their parents want them to secure well-paying jobs.

The singer said he does not want his success to become another source of pressure for young people who are still finding their way in life.

“I just care about the kids who are under pressure,” Rema said, adding that he prefers to keep his lifestyle simple rather than constantly display expensive possessions.

He also explained that his fashion choices reflect this preference, noting that he enjoys streetwear and does not frequently wear designer outfits. According to him, the more extravagant aspects of his appearance are largely limited to accessories such as chains and watches.

Rema’s comments highlight his concerns about social comparison and the expectations young people face while trying to achieve personal and professional success.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the singer’s remarks emphasise the importance of allowing people to pursue their ambitions at their own pace without feeling compelled to measure their progress against the lifestyles of celebrities or their peers.
