Real Madrid Wonderkid Diomande Shatters Records After Stunning Display Against Leipzig
Real Madrid winger Yan Diomande has made history in the UEFA Champions League after scoring a goal and providing an assist in his side’s emphatic 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig on Wednesday.
The 19-year-old Ivory Coast international became the youngest African player to register both a goal and an assist in a single Champions League match since former Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins achieved the feat in 2003.
Diomande, aged 19 years, 11 months and seven days, came on as a substitute in the 70th minute against his former club. He subsequently provided an assist for Kylian Mbappé before finding the net himself in the 87th minute to complete Real Madrid’s victory.
Martins had recorded a similar achievement for Inter Milan in their 3-0 Champions League win over Arsenal at Highbury on September 17, 2003, when he was 18 years and 10 months old.
Diomande joined Real Madrid from RB Leipzig in August 2026 in a deal reportedly worth €125 million, with a further €15 million in potential add-ons. The transfer was reported to have made him the most expensive African footballer in history and Real Madrid’s record signing.
Despite the high expectations surrounding his arrival, the young winger initially faced criticism over his decision-making during matches. Former manager José Mourinho reportedly described him as a player with considerable room for improvement following a game against Sevilla.
However, Diomande has responded with a series of impressive displays, recording six goal contributions across his last four appearances for the Spanish giants.
The winger also recently became Real Madrid’s youngest player this century to score and provide an assist in the same La Liga match, surpassing the previous record held by Jude Bellingham, who achieved the feat at 20 years and 51 days old.
His latest performance against Leipzig further underlines his growing influence at the club and strengthens his reputation as one of the exciting young talents in European football.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Diomande’s remarkable achievement has drawn fresh attention to the rising Ivorian star, whose recent performances suggest he is quickly overcoming the early criticism that followed his arrival at Real Madrid.
