That Goal Hurt Me: Fabregas Admits Mistake After Como Humiliate Man United

Como head coach Cesc Fabregas has admitted that he regrets instructing his players to reduce their intensity during the closing stages of their emphatic 4-1 victory over Manchester United on October 22.

The Italian side delivered an impressive performance against Michael Carrick’s team at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, with Nico Paz scoring twice, while Tasos Douvikas and Jacobo Ramon also found the net. Manchester United managed a late consolation through substitute Joshua Zirkzee.

Fabregas accepted responsibility for United’s late goal, explaining that he had asked his players to conserve energy with another Serie A fixture against Sassuolo scheduled for Saturday.

The former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder said he instructed his team to slow the pace because they had established a comfortable four-goal advantage and needed to manage their energy ahead of the next match.

He particularly regretted telling Douvikas to stop making forward runs and remain in a central position, admitting that the decision contributed to his frustration over conceding late in the game.

Despite the disappointment, Fabregas praised his players for their discipline, quality and relentless pressing throughout most of the contest. He said their performance reflected the tactical principles and intensity he wants to establish at the club.

The Spanish coach also described the result as another significant step in Como’s efforts to develop a distinct footballing identity and a consistent style of play.

Fabregas acknowledged that defeating a club with Manchester United’s rich history was a source of pride, particularly given the difficulties Como have experienced over the years.

However, he stressed that his greatest satisfaction came from seeing his players execute his preferred approach to football, highlighting their confidence, aggression, technical quality and commitment to pressing their opponents.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Fabregas was pleased with Como’s dominant display against Manchester United but admitted that his late tactical instruction, intended to preserve energy ahead of their next fixture, left him disappointed after Zirkzee’s consolation goal.
