WAFU B Final Controversy: Edo Queens Challenge CAF Decision After Extra-Time Defeat

Published

Nigerian champions Edo Queens have formally petitioned the Confederation of African Football (CAF), seeking the cancellation of the continuation of their WAFU B Women’s Champions League final against Ghanaian side Ampem Darkoa Ladies FC.

The club is challenging the circumstances surrounding the resumption of the final, which was initially played on September 5, 2026, in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The encounter ended 2-2 after 90 minutes, before Edo Queens secured a 4-1 victory in the penalty shoot-out.

However, CAF’s Organising Committee, in a decision dated September 26, 2026, ruled that the penalty shoot-out had no sporting effect and directed that the match should resume from the beginning of extra time, with the score remaining 2-2. The decision was subsequently upheld by the CAF Appeal Board on October 16.

According to information made available to Bush Radio Academy, Edo Queens have raised three major objections in their petition, including what they described as an unauthorised change of venue from Ouagadougou to Cairo, Egypt, without the required confirmation from the WAFU B authorities in line with CAF’s directive.

The Nigerian club also accused the organisers of failing to restore the original sporting conditions, alleging that it was prevented from fielding eligible players who featured in the first encounter.

Edo Queens further expressed concerns about the accommodation arrangements for their delegation, claiming that their officials and players were lodged at a military facility instead of a conventional hotel designated for participating teams.

The club also complained about what it described as inadequate official communication regarding the venue, kick-off time and other arrangements for the continuation of the match.

Consequently, Edo Queens have asked CAF to declare the October 29 continuation null and void and order a fresh 90-minute encounter at the original venue in Ouagadougou.

Alternatively, the Nigerian side wants CAF to recognise it as the winner of the WAFU B tournament if a replay cannot be completed before the commencement of the CAF Women’s Champions League on November 1, 2026.

However, the controversy has been further complicated by the outcome of the resumed encounter in Cairo on Thursday, where Edo Queens suffered a 1-0 defeat to Ampem Darkoa after extra time.

The latest petition places the disputed final before CAF once again, with Edo Queens seeking a review of the circumstances surrounding the continuation of the match and its eventual outcome.
