Lookman Set For New Role As Atletico Boss Considers Major Formation Change

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone is reportedly considering a tactical adjustment that could see Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman take up a new position as the Spanish club seeks to rediscover his best form.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the Argentine tactician is exploring the possibility of adopting a 4-3-3 formation, with Lookman potentially operating as the team’s left winger.

The Super Eagles attacker has featured in different attacking positions this season, including left wing, second striker, centre-forward and attacking midfielder.

Lookman enjoyed an impressive beginning to life at Atletico Madrid after joining the club from Atalanta during the winter transfer window. He announced his arrival with a goal and an assist in a commanding 5-0 victory over Real Betis on his debut.

The 29-year-old quickly established himself as an important member of Simeone’s squad, helping Atletico reach the Copa del Rey final and the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. He finished the campaign with nine goals and four assists in 24 appearances across all competitions.

However, the Nigerian international has struggled to reproduce those performances this season. He has recorded just two goals and one assist in 13 appearances, accumulating 692 minutes of playing time.

Although Lookman recently provided an assist for Julian Alvarez against Stuttgart, his overall performance in Atletico’s meeting with Deportivo reportedly fell below expectations. Simeone subsequently substituted him at half-time.

The reported tactical consideration suggests that the Atletico manager is looking for ways to get the best out of the Nigerian forward again.

Operating from the left flank in a 4-3-3 system could allow Lookman to make better use of his pace, dribbling skills and attacking instincts while creating more opportunities to threaten opposition defences.

Simeone will hope that the possible formation change helps the former African Footballer of the Year regain his confidence and become a decisive figure in Atletico Madrid’s attack once again.
