A Nigerian man has sparked reactions online after recounting how his employer confronted him for spending ₦600,000 from a ₦2.5 million payment mistakenly transferred into his account instead of his regular monthly salary of ₦250,000.

The man shared the experience on X, formerly known as Twitter, explaining that he noticed the unusual payment shortly after it entered his account but decided to wait for his employer to contact him.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the situation took an unexpected turn three days later when the company’s Human Resources department invited him to a meeting with his boss.

During the meeting, his employer reportedly asked whether he had checked the amount paid as his salary before explaining that the ₦2.5 million was intended for the family of a deceased colleague.

The boss reportedly disclosed that the late employee’s widow had been reaching out to the company for financial assistance because she and her children were struggling following her husband’s death.

The man said he was particularly shocked when his boss showed him a message from the widow pleading for help.

In the message, the woman reportedly wrote: “Please, sir. My children haven’t eaten properly since their father died.”

The employee admitted that he had already spent ₦600,000 from the money and immediately requested the company’s account details so he could return the amount.

However, the conversation took a more emotional turn when his boss revealed that the late colleague had recommended him for a promotion before his death.

According to the man’s account, his boss explained that the deceased employee had described him as the most honest person in the office and had expressed confidence in his integrity.

His boss reportedly told him: “Your late colleague recommended you for a promotion before he died. He said you were the most honest person in this office. I wanted to believe him. Yesterday, you gave me a reason not to.”

The man said the revelation left him deeply embarrassed, particularly after discovering that the money was meant to support the family of a former colleague who had trusted the company to look after his loved ones after his death.

The incident has since generated discussions on social media about honesty, integrity and accountability, with many reflecting on the importance of handling money mistakenly received with caution and returning funds that do not belong to them.
