A Critical Juncture in Russia’s 16-Month War in Ukraine: Prigozhin’s Alleged Treason Challenges Putin’s Authority....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Amidst the intensifying conflict, Russian leader Vladimir Putin has accused Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner mercenary group, of treason and launching an armed rebellion, describing it as a betrayal of the nation. Prigozhin, a prominent figure in Russia, asserts that his objective is not a military coup but rather a quest for justice.

What’s going on?

Yevgeny Prigozhin, who has played a crucial role in Russia’s military operations in Ukraine, particularly through his Wagner mercenary group, has been engaged in a long-standing dispute with the military leaders overseeing the war. However, this conflict has now escalated into a full-scale revolt.

Wagner forces have reportedly crossed the border from occupied eastern Ukraine and infiltrated Rostov-on-Don, a major city in southern Russia, where they claim to have seized control of military installations.

President Putin has acknowledged the challenging situation but has assured that Russia will take all necessary measures to safeguard its interests.

All claims of a military coup are absurd, claims Prigozhin.

But what began as a no-holds-barred row over the military’s failure to supply his mercenaries with sufficient kit and ammunition has now spilled over into a direct challenge to the two men in charge of prosecuting the war – Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and armed forces chief Valery Gerasimov.

So far this is not a coup, as there has been no bid to seize power from the government. But it is an attempt to topple Russia’s top military men and therefore a challenge to the president’s authority.

Prigozhin’s Actions Unfold Rapidly

Prigozhin, a longtime ally of President Putin, has enjoyed success and influence under his leadership, initially as a wealthy entrepreneur and later as the head of a mercenary group.

His Wagner fighters have suffered heavy casualties during the protracted and ultimately unsuccessful campaign to seize Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine.

Prigozhin squarely blamed the military high command for the shortages of ammunition, sharing graphic videos and using profanity-laden social media rants to expose the deficiencies and internal divisions within Russia’s military operations in Ukraine.

While he never directly targeted the president in his outbursts, his sarcastic references to the “happy grandfather” were widely interpreted as indirect criticism.

Last month, he raised doubts about Russia’s chances of success if it turned out that “this grandfather is a complete arsehole.”

Then, in a lengthy diatribe on June 23, he revealed that the entire pretext for the war was a lie, alleging that it was merely an excuse for a “small group of scumbags” to promote themselves and deceive both the public and the president.

Subsequent events unfolded rapidly.

Prigozhin accused the military of orchestrating a deadly shelling on his personnel in Ukraine, but the military denied it, and he failed to produce his usual array of evidence.

Late on Friday, he declared that his “march for justice” had begun, stating that his force of 25,000 was only a “tactical reserve,” with the entire army and the entire country serving as their strategic reserve.

General Sergei Surovikin, deputy commander of forces in Ukraine, appealed to him to step back and submit to President Putin’s authority.

However, by morning, Prigozhin’s forces had reached Rostov, with him declaring, “We are inside [military] headquarters.”

A Crucial Moment for Putin and Russia

While not a direct confrontation to Russia’s involvement in the war in Ukraine or the president’s authority, the situation has reached a level of seriousness that prompted President Putin to deliver a determined and unwavering televised address lasting five minutes.

Prigozhin’s threats extend beyond establishing a presence in Rostov; he has also indicated his intention to advance towards Moscow unless his military demands are met.

Previously, Prigozhin’s conflicts were primarily centered around securing increased weaponry for his forces, but now he is directly challenging the leadership itself.

Prigozhin enjoys significant public support in Russia, and even if his challenge were to falter, this still represents a moment of crisis for a military that has heavily relied on his mercenaries in Ukraine.

However, this moment also serves as a defining point for the leadership of Putin and a wake-up call for the Russian populace. It remains uncertain how this situation will ultimately unfold. (BBC)
