Adewole emphasized the importance of Nigeria, being the largest country in terms of economy, population, and influence, taking on a role of enlightened self-interest in addressing the challenges faced by ECOWAS. He stressed the need for poverty reduction and robust security measures within Nigeria to ensure that the country can effectively contribute to the progress and stability of the region.

In his statement, Adewole warned against neglecting domestic issues while focusing solely on external affairs. He urged for a balanced approach, highlighting the significance of addressing poverty and enhancing security measures within Nigeria alongside actively engaging in regional affairs.

By congratulating President Tinubu and advocating for a strategic and holistic approach to regional and domestic challenges, Adewole aims to promote a collective effort towards poverty alleviation and the establishment of robust security measures, both within Nigeria and the ECOWAS community.

He wrote via his Twitter handle; I congratulate @officialABAT on his election as Chairman of the Authority of ECOWAS. This compels an urgency to appoint a Foreign Minister to serve as Chairman of ECOWAS Council of Ministers. Regional frameworks for democratization, poverty reduction and security must top agenda.”

“Nigeria as the largest country, economy, contributor, population and strongest power in ECOWAS must adopt enlightened self-interest in solving challenges facing ECOWAS by ensuring poverty reduction and robust security at home lest we have soaps in our eyes whilst donating water.”
