Ghana’s Sanitation Minister Steps Down Over Alleged Stashed Cash....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Cecilia Abena Dapaah, Ghana’s sanitation minister, has stepped down from her position following controversy over allegations that her staff discovered and took significant sums of money from her residence. Dapaah, however, refutes any suggestions of misconduct in her resignation letter to the president.

The minister came into the limelight on Friday when two of her former household employees were arraigned in court, charged with the theft of cash and personal items from Dapaah and her husband from July to October 2022.

The court heard from the prosecutors that the accused individuals had purchased properties and a vehicle with the stolen funds, and had also distributed some of the money to their family members. The accused have not responded to these allegations so far.

The theft from Dapaah’s home, reportedly consisting of $1 million, 300,000 euros and a vast amount of local currency, provoked public anger and demands for her resignation on social media. There was widespread skepticism about how such substantial cash sums could have originated, particularly in a nation where some government officials have been involved in corruption scandals.

Dapaah defended herself in her resignation letter, asserting that the reported figures significantly misrepresented the amount that she and her husband had informed the police about. She stated, “I am very much aware of the import of such stories around someone in my position”. She added that she didn’t want this issue to distract the government’s attention, expressing her confidence in her eventual vindication.

The presidency accepted Dapaah’s resignation and commended her contributions without commenting on the allegations against her.

Dapaah was appointed as the minister of sanitation and water resources in 2017, when President Nana Akufo-Addo assumed office, and she retained her position after his re-election in 2021. The president has pledged to take serious measures against corruption
