The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) joined other Nigerians, including the Northern Senators Forum, in rejecting the option of war. Instead, they urged for political and diplomatic efforts to restore democratic governance in Niger.
In a statement by spokesperson Abdulazeez Suleiman, the CNG called on the Nigerian government not to rush into war and emphasized the need to exhaust all economic and diplomatic means to pressure the junta to return power to the democratically elected government in Niger. They urged caution, considering Nigeria’s present domestic fragility.
The coalition reminded ECOWAS and the international community to respect principles of sovereignty and promote peace in their interactions with other nations. They emphasized that a destabilized Niger Republic would pose a significant threat to peace and security across sub-Saharan Africa.
Furthermore, the CNG warned that military intervention in Niger would exacerbate security and humanitarian issues in the West African subregion and have negative consequences for the entire African continent.
It also cautioned President Tinubu against leading a war in Niger, highlighting the potential risks to him, Nigeria, and ECOWAS as a whole.
The coalition urged the Nigerian Senate, the Council of State, and the Nigerian Governors Forum to guide the President in making informed decisions and not pursue a military intervention in Niger, emphasizing the importance of restoring electricity supply to the country.
