Reports from Al Jazeera indicate that the defense chiefs are expected to unveil their proposed course of action during the closing ceremony scheduled for 4 p.m.

Earlier reports revealed that ECOWAS troops expressed their readiness to participate in a standby force designated to restore democracy in Niger after a coup led to the ousting and detention of President Mohamed Bazoum.

With the exception of countries under military rule and Cape Verde, all ECOWAS member states agreed to activate this “standby force” during a meeting in Ghana’s capital, Accra, on Thursday. The force would serve as a final option to restore democratic governance in Niger.

Abdel-Fatau Musah, the ECOWAS commissioner, confirmed this resolution to Al Jazeera.

Furthermore, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, emphasized the importance of democracy and peace in the region.

He stated, “Democracy is what we stand for and it’s what we encourage. The focus of our gathering is not simply to react to events, but to proactively chart a course that results in peace and promotes stability.”

During their two-day meeting in Accra, the ECOWAS defense chiefs are meticulously refining the details of a potential military operation to restore President Bazoum, should ongoing negotiations with the coup leaders fail.
