The group of officers, representing a collective of the nation’s security and defense forces, announced the dissolution of state institutions and the cancellation of the recent election results. Furthermore, the country’s borders have been sealed indefinitely.

The officers proclaimed, “In the name of the Gabonese people … we have decided to defend the peace by putting an end to the current regime.”

This unexpected power grab comes in the shadow of Saturday’s multi-faceted elections, where President Bongo secured victory, perpetuating his family’s reign over Gabon that has lasted for over half a century.

Gabon’s coup puts it in line with a string of recent military takeovers in Africa, following nations like Burkina Faso, Mali, and most recently, Niger Republic. This series of coups has caught the attention of the ECOWAS bloc, led by Nigeria, leading to discussions about potential interventions.
