Historical Context: In 1947, as a solution to the escalating tensions, the United Nations proposed a bifurcation of the British Mandate of Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states. While the Jewish community welcomed this proposal, it was rejected by the Arab populace. Consequently, in 1948, Israel was proclaimed a state, prompting neighboring Arab nations to wage a war in opposition.
This confrontation concluded in 1949, leaving Israel predominant over a majority of the former Mandate of Palestine and leading to the displacement of countless Palestinians.
Current Dynamics: Today, Israel maintains control over the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem. While these regions are identified as Palestinian territories as per international norms, Israel’s military occupation persists. The Palestinians, though possessing limited autonomy in the West Bank and Gaza, lack full sovereignty. Moreover, Israel’s establishment of settlements in the West Bank, deemed illegal by international law, has augmented the fragmentation of Palestinian territories.
