She made these remarks during the matriculation ceremony for the 2023/2024 session of the School of Politics, Policy and Governance (SPPG) in Abuja on Friday.

Ezekwesili highlighted a prevailing political culture in Africa that prioritizes narrow interests over the common good. She established the school with the aim of finding solutions to improve Nigeria’s political and economic performance.

The SPPG, according to her, is designed to address the shortcomings in the political and democratic aspects of the country.

She criticized the prevalence of low-cost leadership in Nigerian politics, which she believes hinders progress.

She believes that Africa’s young population and technological advancements can drive the continent forward, but the political and governance processes remain significant obstacles.

To address these issues, Ezekwesili stressed the need for a new pipeline of leaders who can challenge the dominant political class and culture. She urged the students to embrace a mindset of service to the country and its people at all levels and emphasized their role in effecting positive change.

Ezekwesili encouraged the students to be purposeful and intentional in their pursuit of solutions to Africa’s challenges, stating that they represent a critical mass capable of bringing about positive change on the continent.
